Our Guide to Exploring Cornwall this February Half Term

Outdoor adventures, coastal views and family-friendly days in South Cornwall

February half term in Cornwall is a season of fresh air and freedom. It’s about pulling on wellies, packing a flask and heading out - whether the sky is blue or beautifully dramatic. From West Carclaze Garden Village, you’re perfectly placed to explore some of South Cornwall’s most scenic coastlines, historic landscapes and family-friendly attractions, all without long drives or crowded hotspots.

Here’s our guide to making the most of February half term around St Austell - whatever the weather brings.

Gardens, History & Woodland Walks

A winter visit to The Lost Gardens of Heligan is a must during half term. With fewer visitors and a quieter atmosphere, it’s the perfect time to explore the Jungle, spot early snowdrops and let children roam along winding woodland paths and rope bridges. There’s plenty of space to explore at your own pace, followed by a warming lunch in the café.

For a deeper dive into Cornwall’s landscape and heritage, Wheal Martyn Clay Works is a brilliant half-term choice. Hands-on exhibits, trails through former clay pits and plenty of space outdoors make this an engaging day out for curious minds.

If you’re keen to stretch your legs, the Clay Trails offer family-friendly walking and cycling routes through Cornwall’s historic china-clay country. These flat, traffic-free trails are ideal for bikes, scooters or an easy afternoon walk surrounded by wide skies and peaceful scenery.

Coastal Villages, Scenic Drives & Winter Beaches

A short drive from West Carclaze takes you to the historic harbour village of Charlestown, where tall ships, pebble beaches and Georgian architecture make for a relaxed wander. From here, continue along the coast towards Mevagissey – the scenic drive between the two offers some of the best sea views in Cornwall, particularly striking in winter light.

February is an ideal time for beach walks and shoreline exploring. Sheltered coves such as Gorran Haven are perfect for rock pooling, beachcombing and sea-air strolls. Winter seas can be dramatic and with a bit of luck, you may even spot seals along the coastline – binoculars recommended.

Cold weather never stops Cornish adventures; it just makes the hot chocolate afterwards taste even better.

Big Outdoor Adventures

For a classic Cornish family day out, the Camel Trail is well worth the drive. This flat, traffic-free route winds along The River Camel and is ideal for cycling or walking. Wrap up warm and enjoy a picnic on route or a café stop at the end.

If you have older children who love high-energy days, Adrenalin Quarry offers an unforgettable experience. From zip wires to giant swings, it’s a great way to burn off energy while spending time outdoors in a spectacular quarry setting.

For younger children, Camel Creek Adventure Park combines outdoor rides, animals and indoor play areas making it a reliable half-term favourite regardless of the weather.

Creative, Educational & Rainy-Day Wins

For something imaginative and immersive, The Story of Emily is a fantastic new attraction. Combining storytelling, history and creative technology, it’s engaging for children while still feeling thoughtful and memorable.

If the weather turns, Kidzworld Adventure Play in nearby Par is ideal for under-10s needing space to climb, run and play. It’s a great option to keep in mind as a flexible half-term backup.

Just minutes from West Carclaze, the Eden Project is always a strong contender. The warm biomes are a welcome contrast to winter weather, and half-term activities make it easy to spend a full day exploring. They’ve even extended their Ice Skating rink until 22 February, and Half Term brings even more bags of fun with special appearances from characters from Julia Donaldson’s The Scarecrows Wedding.

Cosy Stops: Pubs & Coffee Along the Way

Half-term adventures are best balanced with somewhere warm and welcoming to refuel. Around St Austell and the south coast, there are plenty of relaxed spots worth building into your plans:

The Longstore, Charlestown – harbour-side dining with generous, comforting dishes.

The Sharks Fin, Mevagissey – a proper Cornish pub with outstanding seafood and harbour views.

Polgooth Inn, St Austell – perfect after a long walk, with a family-friendly atmosphere.

Slowing Down, Cornwall Style

February half term is a wonderful time to explore this corner of Cornwall. Quieter paths, dramatic coastlines and space to enjoy the outdoors at your own pace. We hope this guide inspires a few fresh-air adventures and easy days out close to home.
